Events and Activities
Civic Awareness – in 2001, HLG started extending invitations to elected officials in the St.
Louis region (Missouri and Illinois) to attend the annual Civic Awareness event. The emphasis
of the event is to represent the Hispanic community to local and state lawmakers so that the
Hispanic voice as a community is heard. Issues that concern are addressed in the special
function with the goal of educating all participants and making a difference for the betterment
of the community.
Hispanic Day at Jefferson City – This event was started in 2002 under the initiative of HLG.
Representatives from around the State spend a day meeting with elected officials and heads of
agencies and departments, gather information and take it back to their communities. The
event educates participants on the process of government and the best way to approach
agencies for the assistance which can be rendered to the Hispanic Community. The day allows
Hispanics to meet, to discuss with, to educate, and to influence the makers of the laws, and the
administrators
Premio Esperanza (Hope Award) – The Hispanic Leaders Group of Greater St. Louis (HLG),
founded in 1983 and a well-recognized community organization enjoying sound credibility
among many local and statewide organizations, institutions, and agencies, recognizes that
many individuals within our greater St. Louis community have been concerned with many
issues affecting the ever-growing Hispanic community.
Coinciding with the organization’s 20th anniversary, Premio Esperanza was established by The
Hispanic Leaders Group of Greater St. Louis in 2003 under the initiative of Anthony B.
Ramirez. The establishment of the annual recognition program helps bring forth to the public
those distinguished individuals and/or organizations (click here)

Scholarships – The board of directors of Image, Inc. upon the dissolution of the nonprofit
corporation in 2004, decided to dispose the corporation’s assets by donating $12,835.64 to
HLG. The purpose of Image, Inc. was to promote education, employment opportunities and civil
rights for Hispanic-Americans. The board of directors of HLG accepted the donation and in
2005 decided to use the funds to promote scholarship in the Hispanic community. Two
scholarships are awarded to college/university students; one is based on merit and the other
on financial need. An additional scholarship has been offered to a student at a vocational or
trade school.
